The fiercely anticipated 2021 Ford Bronco is still a bit of a mystery: We don’t understand for sure what sort of powertrain it’ll have, any of the performance specs, or exactly when it’s going to make its first uncamouflaged appearance finally. We’ve got some strong concepts about the upcoming SUV, however, and now we have what we think is detail, through the U.S. Patent and Hallmark Workplace, of just how its doors will be detachable.
Ford’s patent details a new system for getting rid of doors that appears conceptually better than Jeep’s existing system. Unlike Jeep, Ford won’t ask you to eliminate screws and bolts or require the usage of multiple screwdrivers. The patent shows a set of locks, as in the sketch above, that permit doors to be gotten rid of when the lock is disengaged, which is a far easier option. (Yes, we know the sketch is more Ford Flex– like than the Bronco will be, although it will be available in both 2- and four-door kinds.).

To make sure that it does not become disengaged, Ford details a series of locks and fail-safes that will avoid an unneeded unlatching. The first line of the patent even states, “This disclosure normally associates with a lock that can block a door of a vehicle from being removed when the vehicle is not in an upright position.” A lot for concern that the doors might fall off in case of a rollover during off-roading shenanigans.
Based on the photos, a little rod links the locking mechanism to the door. When the rod is pulled down, the latch is disengaged from the door, which can then be removed at the hinges. The only other connection that requires to be eliminated in theory is the electrical wiring that powers the locks and windows of the window. Putting the doors back on ought to be a simple matter of putting the door back on the hinges and re-engaging the lock, along with the electrical connections that would have to be reconnected.
We do not understand if the Bronco will have a removable and foldable windscreen as the Wrangler has, or if the roofing panels will come off like the Wrangler’s.
